Program

Here is the exciting finale of the
Telephone Art Quilt.
Team One began with a popsicle.
Carol had the Sunbonnet Sue's share the popsicle under a tree dropping its leaves.
Lorena saw two girlfriends sharing an umbrella in a shower.
Laura saw the May flowers April showers bring.
Bobbi Marvel (not there) focused on the purple and gold and made confetti flowers.
Tong took the purple and gold and added bears.

It's always good to add bears.
Team Two started with the back end of a VW bug.
Liz took the wheel of the bug (and left the rest behind)

and made it a sun.
Lynette took the sun and made it a moon shining

on a lake framed by trees.
Marie (not there) thought the black trees were spooky

and made a Halloween scene.  There's a full moon in there.
Felicity expanded the Halloween theme, full moon, too.
Ginny went on to another holiday and made the full moons

into a Santa Bear's eyes.

Team Three started with a unicorn in a circle.
Ginny reproduced the unicorn in a forest.
MJ put a circle of fairies in her forest.
Beth took the circle and made it mystical with embroidery.
Bev took the circle and stamped it into a sunny day in India complete with an elephant.
Kathy made the sun a sunset in silk.
No bears in this group.  Just unicorns and an elephant.

Ginny Duhm did a truly great job organizing the event
and even made two quilts.
Ginny explained how making a unicorn quilt wasn't especially exciting for her personally until she reached into her Bible and found the symbolism of everything in her quilt.  Then it became meaningful to her and moving to us to hear her process.
Kudos to Gin!

Bev Cressey, Kathy Weinstein, Gracia Stahl and Diane McBain ready to ride in the Lilac Parade.

The Scrappers entry in the Lilac Festival Parade this year was a 1914 Model T decked out in lilacs and purples.  It was an amazing ride.  Thanks to Ron Cressey and Bev for the loan of their
classic beauty.  Thanks also to the decorators: Bev, MJ, Chau, Gracia and Felicity.

Our spacious booth at the Festival was located in a great spot.  Thanks to those who spent time in the booth

taking care of card sales and raffle tickets.
Special thanks to Mae and Rit Higgins and Mel Weinstein.

Comfort Zone

This month's big event is the Darlene Memorial Sew In on the 5th Wednesday of June.
Darlene acquired a very impressive fabric stash which she was unable to use before she passed away. Her husband, Dave,
donated 378 yards of quality material for Comfort Zone
and other quilt guild projects.
So join us on June 29 from 9 to 3 at the Pool Pavilion for a day of making "Pillowcase Totebags."
We've opened this event to all, so bring your friends.
Bring your sewing machine and your enthusiasm.
We will provide lunch and a lot of prizes.

Don't forget the 4th Wednesday of June is our regular Comfort Zone workshop at the Pool pavilion from 9 to 3, June 22.

Library

Tip of the Month

From Beth Worrell...

We've lost two of our nearby quilt shops recently.  Quilt shop owners say they see customers come in to their shops, look at fabric, take photos of the bolt end and leave the shop to go home and order the fabric on line.
If you see the fabric you want in a quilt shop,
buy it from the quilt shop.
We need to keep them in business.
>>>>><
Here's a tutorial on reducing hand fatigue when using scissors.  Good to know in advance of the Paisley Bear class in September.

May 2016 News & View

May 2016

President's Message

What does a quilt guild president do?  Pretty much what she wants.  Like quilting, there are no "rules."  There are guidelines and that is what they are: guides. Every president has her own way of doing things.  I'm an overachiever
so don't go by me.
Having said that,  I am looking for my successor. Not that I wouldn't mind being PMSQG president for life--it's just not the right thing to do.  New blood is good for everybody and I'd like to travel more for a while.

  The Guild needs someone who:
  • Bangs the gavel at the Thursday night meeting.
  • Liaisons with the Association
  • Meets with the committees now and then to sort of oversee what's going on.
The work load is what you make it.  The Committee Chairs are independent.  When they have a question, they ask.  Two heads are always better.  Your fellow board members--VP, Secretary and Treasurer--are a great sounding board and if you can't make the Thursday night meeting, they step in.
So when I tap you on the shoulder and say "Congratulations," don't panic. Know that you are going to have a most rewarding  experience and we are all here to back you up.
Kathy

Lunch with Sequoia
Sequoia Ricoy brought her mom, Sonia, with her when she came to visit the Guild on Friday April 29. After looking her aunties over for a bit, Sequoia took over QCM.  She then joined the Red Hatters for lunch at La Sierra before taking her afternoon nap and returning to Carpenteria.

By the way, Sonia looked stunning and it was just delightful to have her back with us.
Sequoia is very sociable but just a bit too small to use the gavel otherwise she could be our next president!

Another Quilt Shop "Retires"

On the heels of Maricopa Quilt Company closing, word came that Strawberry Patches will be closing in June.  Like Maricopa, the owners are retiring but if buyers could be found....
Everything is on sale.  Call Strawberry Patches for details.

Comfort Zone
We have kits!
Thanks to incredible donations of fabric from  our member, Kay Anderson and from the Kruitak family, Carol, Felicity and Bettina have put together a total of 70 quilt kits and 30 tote bag kits.  And there's still fabric for later.
To honor the late Darlene Kruitak, the Wednesday June 29 Comfort Zone Sew Down will be dedicated to her.  We will be putting together tote bags from 9 to 3 in the Pool Pavilion with lunch, prizes and chocolate.
We will be opening this workshop to everyone. Bring your family and friends and your sewing machine.

Opportunity Quilt News

Our 2016-2017 Opportunity Quilt will make its debut at the Lilac Festival.  Thanks to Felicity for another outstanding quilting job.  Mae is busy now with the binding.  We will name the quilt at the June Meeting but it's already going by "Serenity."
May Program:  Sharon Powell

Sharon Powell RN, Nurse Practitioner  and quilter--and former Scrapper as you can see by her name tag--was our May guest.    Sharon showed off several of her quilts but more importantly, she spoke about the Pine Mountain Health Center, the clinic she and her husband, John, run in the village.
The Powells opened the clinic two years ago mostly on faith.  As Sharon put it, miracles keep happening that keeps the clinic in operation.
You can make an appointment for a check up or for a problem.  Walk ins are welcome.  The Clinic has a special designation as a rural facility so all insurances except Kaiser* are taken--Medicare, Medical.  Prices for care are comparable to other agencies and definitely affordable.

The Pine Mountain Health Center is a great asset to our community.
Sharon and John Powell are indeed "angels."
*Kaiser will pay if services are done at a time when Kaiser is closed.

June's Program will be the Telephone Art Quilt results.
Ginny Duhm reminds the contestants to please
share with us at the meeting.

Want to Know How She Does That?
MJ Glaseman is going to share her secret of three dimensional flowers on Friday June 3 from 9 to 3 in the Pool pavilion.  Her class costs $15 and supplies are
sewing machine
hand sewing needle
thread to match your fabric
basic sewing supplies
floral fabric in colors of your choice
green fabric for leaves

June 3 QCM will be at Kathy Weinstein's from 10  to 2.
