June 2015 News & Views

President's Message

June 2015
Past President  Mary Morstad  President's Message
When Mary Morstad moved to PMC in 2000, she did not quilt; she had really never done any crafts of any kind and had never sewn anything.  But she moved in next to Mieke Kerstra, one of our emeritus members, and being two Dutch girls, they became fast friends.  Mieke taught Mary how to quilt, told her which machine to buy and got her into the Guild.   Mary's background  was as a judge for the American Kennel Club and she served as president of the AKC Samoyed Club for eleven years so she knew how to be presidential. When the Guild asked her to be their president (a new quilter!), Mary used her administrative talents to organize the guild, create a format, keep records and do all kinds of orderly things.  Mary credits Liz Buchroeder for giving her a lot of help during this process.  Mary enjoyed being President and getting to know everybody.  Health issues over the last couple of years had kept her away but Mary was part of the Quilt Show committee this year and we look forward to seeing more of her.

 PROGRAM

Russell Conte and a plaid quilt.
June's Program

Russell Conte, owner of the Sewing Arts Center in Santa Monica, entertained and educated us about the "State of the Art" in quilting.  This man can sew.  He brought along dozens of quilts he's designed and made over the last 20 years.  Currently Russell is working on a book of his own plaid inspired quilts.   Some of Russell's quilts are pictured throughout this newsletter but  if you are in Santa Monica near Pico and Centinela, right off the 10 Freeway, stop in and visit Russell and his crew.  SAC is a great shop and Russell is a great guy.

Telephone Art Quilt
 Ginny Duhm

The Telephone Challenge is a project as seen at several quilt shows where small groups of quilters (6-7) design their own art quilts based on just one picture, making them just one person at a time.

The first artist in each group starts with a picture to inspire her original art quilt.  Then only that original art quilt is passed on to the next group member as the inspiration for her own original art quilt.  Like the old game of "Telephone,"we continue to pass along the newly created art quilt to the next member without revealing any member's name or description of art quilts in the series.

Our goal is to create an interesting series of art quilts based on each other's work.  We will not share our work with each other until Reveal Night in about one year and so we will not be influenced by any other person or her work.  No names should go on the finished quilts in order to maintain secrecy throughout the project.

At the end of the project, each participant will have her own art quilt to keep. This is all serious hush-hush; you know, mum's the word--how will we ever succeed with so many secrets
for an entire year?

This is not to be confused with or compete with the Halloween Challenge due at the October meeting.

For a definition of Art Quilt, see Quilt Culture below.

Show and Tell

Kathleen Weeks shows the back of her gifted quilt.

Allie never wanted a Nutcracker quilt until her friend gave her this kit.

Kathleen is a lacer, now a lacer-quilter.  Her fellow lacers gifted her with this Gracia Stahl quilt which she treasures.

QCM, Brainstorm, Pot Luck and the Stash Bash
June 12

We have Quilt&Chat&More every Friday from 9 to 2:30 in the Pool Pavilion and it's open to all.  On the second Friday of the month, we have a pot luck at noon and Brainstorm at 12:30.  The Brainstorm is where you bring your ideas to be discussed informally by the group.  There are no bad ideas except the one that nobody brought up!

The Stash Bash grew out of the Brainstorm.  Our membership includes a lot of new quilters.  The newbies need to start hoarding fabric build their stashes of fabric and tools.  So OLDTIMERS bring some of what you don't really need (it's hard, I know) of fabric, tools, books etc to QCM.
STASH BASH IS FOR THE NEWCOMERS.
We will have a "yard sale" event later in the year for all.

@@@
Fiesta, No
Due to the success of the Lilac Festival, the guild will not have a booth at Fiesta Days.  Our next big event for cards and raffle tickets will be the Craft Fair in November.  Now is a good time to start making items to sell at the Craft Fair which is the Saturday after Thanksgiving .

Don't forget to sell Opportunity Quilt raffle tickets to your friends and family.  Mae Higgins has tickets if you need them.

  Tip of the Month

From Gayle Gentile Royal:   Stitch in the ditch works better when you stitch on the lower side of the seam.  Who knew?
From Russell Conte:  Change your needle after 8 hours of use and use 70 Microtex for piecing.
Also use a 2.0 mm stitch for piecing.  It keeps the edges from coming apart.

Quilt Culture--Art Quilt

An art quilt is an original exploration of a concept or idea rather than the handing down of a “pattern.” It experiments with textile manipulation, color, texture and/or a diversity of mixed media. An Art Quilt often pushes quilt world boundaries. An Art Quilt should consist predominately of fiber or a fiber-like material with one or multiple layers which are held together with stitches or piercing the layers.
