November & December 2014 News & Views

November/December 2014

President's Message

What a year 2014 has been for the Scrappers!  Once again we reached our Comfort Zone goal of 100 quilts and 100 tote bags and delivered them to the Jamison Center. This Craft Fair was the most successful ever in large part to our Card Makers.  Our Christmas Party was a blast.  While some of our members left the hill, we gained a group of enthusiastic  new members. Our quilts are hanging the Clubhouse office and on the wall of the new firehouse.  Our programs brought in talented teachers and everyone of us have entries  for the 2015 quilt show.  Our library is bursting.  We won ribbons at the Kern County Fair.  We donated lots  of food to the Food Bank. We outdid ourselves with the 2015 Opportunity Quilt(s).  Most importantly, we all had fun.
From the bottom of my heart, I thank you all for making the Guild a success in so many ways.
We really are a team.

K.

Our November Meeting

SOUP was sent to Mae Higgins following her accident.  Fortunately, Mae's injuries were not critical, just painful.

Quilt @ My House was held at Marie Centeno's

November 13.  There's no Q@MH in December.  Carole Beigle will have the sign up sheet for us at the January 8 meeting.

Refreshments at the meeting were supplied by Laura Andresen and MJ Glaseman.
Gourmet delights and chocolate for sure.

Our outgoing Librarian, Tong Sproul, announced that we have the entire set of Elm Creek Quilt novels in our Library.  She introduced our new Librarian, Ann Coyle.

Block of the Month chair, Felicity Watson gave us a year of challenging original designs.  Liz Buchroeder and her lovely assistant, Beth Worrell, will bring us a new challenging block of the month at our  January 8, 2015 meeting.

Challenge Quilters,  Brenda Martin and Terry Page, introduced the 2015 Challenge Quilt and it's a Halloween theme.  A fat quarter of the "Boo" fabric is available for $1.

   Our Christmas Party

The Party Girls, Marge Arroyo and Marie Centeno, did it again.  "Silver Bells" featured raffles, songs, games and
the Scrappers famous pot luck supper.
Let's hope laughter burns calories!

Kathy Weinstein, your president, thanked the Board and committee chairs for their contribution to the Guild this year.  Several members were recognized for their service above and beyond.

Not the Andrews Sisters sang(?) the Scrappers jingle written by Allie Jo for the Christmas in the Village festivities on December 13.

All of this years door prizes from Marge Arroyo were raffled off.  Shireen Walker will have new door prizes for us in January.

Donations of food and toys for the Mountain Communities Resource Center overflowed the table.
Thank you for your generosity.

And the winner of OQ2 is.........

Comfort Zone

November is Comfort Zone Month, but we deliver in December.  On December 2, a dozen plus one Scrappers met at the Jamison Children's Center bringing along 100 handmade quilts, 100 pillowcase tote bags, Cabbage patch dolls, and new socks and underwear for the at risk kids.

Special thanks to Carol Wiersma, Felicity Watson, Allie White for organizing the outing.  Extra special thanks to the Mountain Community, our families and friends who donate to our Comfort Zone Project.

Extra, extra special thanks to the Scrappers for making the quilts, tote bags and dolls.

Gracia Stahl

Cards was our major fund raiser in 2014.  The cardmakers are many, with just about everyone lending a hand at monthly card workshops and Quilt & Chat & More every Friday.  Gracia Stahl has done an excellent job this year as Card Chair with Diane McBain as "artistic director."  A great effort on the part of many.

Our cards will be at the Artworks Community Gallery weekends in December and there are still some holiday cards available.

^^^^^^^^^^Membership^^^^^^^^^^^^

It's only $25 a year.
We are asking everyone to fill out a new membership form
which includes your PMC lot number.
See MJ Glaseman and Kathy Weinstein at QCM Fridays in December.

 Tip of the Month

From Sidnee, Marie Centeno's cat:
Please don't leave thread around where animals like me will eat it.  What do we know about thread? Everything looks like food to us.  I am better now but the vet had to remove a lot of thread from my belly and it caused Marie a lot of heartache.  So please take care with that thread and needles, too.   And pins.

From Beth Worrell:

While there are many ways to open pomegranates, the least preferred method is closing the car hatch door on them.  Beth's follow up tip is that Folex gets the juice off best.

Christmas in the Village December 13
The Scrappers are participating in this year's Christmas in the Village.  On November 30, an intrepid group of quilters accompanied by several husbands decorated our tree.  The tree is located near Basecamp on the road to the post office.
The theme of our tree is "We Decorated a Tree." All decorations were donated.  Vote for our tree at Basecamp, Bear With Us and La Lena.

OPPORTUNITY QUILT NEWS

Our 2015 Opportunity Quilts,
Friends of the Forest and Bear Pause

Mae Higgins has done an outstanding job of getting the raffle under way.  Guild members were given envelopes with raffle tickets, photos of the quilts and instructions at the Christmas meeting.  No one is under obligation to sell anything but if the "Opportunity" comes up, you are prepared!
