August 2015 News & Views

August 2015

      President's Message

    Past President, MJ Glaseman
Mary Jaynne started sewing when she was 10.  She describes herself as crafty, in the nice way: embroidery, knitting, those kind of things. She comes from a family of quilters but her first quilting experience was hand piecing class at the old Quilt Emporium, circa 2002.  When she moved to PMC in 2003, MJ was determined to stay busy.  Showing up at Quilt & Chat one Friday, she admitted she had no idea about quilting.  The Dynamic Duo--Alice Chitwood and Victoria Plesa--said "okay, we'll show you."
For MJ joining the guild was like finding a second family. "This group cares about one another and they work together."  MJ credits the guild with teaching her everything about quilting from the basics to the "extra whatever" that makes a quilt creative.
Aside from being a mom and a grandma, MJ has a degree in Floristry Design and Management.  She is also a volunteer with the Kern County Sheriff Department, an active member of PMC's CERT team and an award winning quilter.
"I don't know what I'd do without this group, they keep me happily sane."

PROGRAM Marie Centeno and Ginny Duhm

Sue Rasmussen  returned to Pine Mountain for a lecture and workshop.  Putting her knowledge as a "fabic-ologist" to use on Thursday night Sue taught us how to make needles, thread and fabric work together for perfect quilting.

Friday's class on machine quilting got rave reviews from the attendees.

Thank you Lynette Lame for having QCM at her house on Friday..

Our September 3 meeting will feature a Dawn Burns Trunk Show, not to be missed.

Scholarships for classes are available for members on fixed incomes.  Volunteer time can be transferred into class time as well.  No one should miss a class because it is a financial hardship.  Please talk with a board member, Bev, MJ, Beth or Kathy if you need assistance with any "costs.

Show and Tell

Quilters Roadshow

This quilt was donated to the Mountain Communities SPCA by Maggie Van Ostrand.
Maker and date unknown. It is hand pieced and hand quilted and in very good condition.
Allie White repaired a small hole in the quilt and now it is ready for auction.
Allie asked the Guild on behalf of Patrice Stimpson of the SPCA for an estimated value.
We came up with $2000 but clearly worth more for size, condition and workmanship.

Contact Patrice by private message on Facebook or see her in Security to bid on this quilt.  Benefits animals on the hill.

Lynette Lame's Autumn Leaf
table runner (Beth's Class)
Carol's niece (Good Golly Ginger) made this sudoku quilt for her.

Craft Fair

The club holds a Holiday Craft Fair the Saturday after Thanksgiving every year.  The Guild gets two spaces.  Cards and Opportunity Quilt tickets go on one side and guild member crafts are displayed for sale in the rest of the space.
Guild members are invited to sell any crafts (sorry, no edibles) they make.  Ten per cent of the selling price goes to the guild, the rest to the maker.
The guild has a great reputation for fine crafts.
You want to be part of this.

Kern County Fair

Quilt entries need to be in Bakersfield by Friday August 28.
We should have a lot of entries this year because of the Quilt Show and we will help you get them to the Fair.  Log on to the KCF site and see how easy it is to enter your quilt or quilted item.
Here's the online catalog--skip to page 43.
