May 2015 News & Views

May 2015

President's Message

The sun came out on Saturday May 16 and warmed up PMC.
Our Quilt Mobile won the Parade's Founder Trophy.
Two hundred or so folks visited the Quilt Show.
And before the rain, the beautiful rain,
returned on Sunday afternoon,
even more people visited our booth at the Lilac Festival.
Thanks to everyone (and the husbands) who volunteered.
It was a great success!

Quilting in the Pines 2015

It was a beautiful day for quilts in the park.   Quilts hung under the trees along the southeastern  perimeter of Lampkin Park.  Kiosks rimmed the northwest.  In the center kiosk, quilts made by Terry Page's students from the Peak to Peak Mountain Charter School were on display.

Carol Wiersma and Felicity Watson, our Quilt Show chairs, did an incredible job organizing this event.  Thanks to their committee--Mary Morstad, Ginny Duhm, Laura Andresen, Sonia Ricoy, MJ Glaseman and Kathy Weinstein. Just about every guild member participated in some way to the success of the show.  Our 121 entries were made by 25 members of the guild, the most entries by the most members in PMS quilt show history.  Alice Chitwood and Kay Smith, our long distance members, and Karen Turchan, one of our teachers, came to the show.  The Frazier Park Ladies,  Dawn Burns, LaVern Anderson and Joyce Garrett, had a difficult time picking just one best in each category.   And what cool blocks they made for ribbons.

Here are their decisions:

Other
First Place:  Beth Worrell, "Ardie's Quilt"
Second Place: Ginny Duhm, "Molly's Quilt"
Third Place: Ginny Duhm, "Austin's Quilt"

Bests
Folded Long Cabin: MJ Glaseman

Comments from the viewers were
all favorable with two of the crowd-pleasers being Patsy Dubois' quilt for Opal and
Ruth Ouelette's winterscape.
The Merchants Favorites will be announced at the June 4 meeting.
Every quilt was a winner!

Princess Felicity

The PMS Scrappers Quilt Mobile took the top prize at the Lilac Festival Parade--the Founders Trophy.   Princess Felicity Watson rode on the Quilt Mobile driven by Kathy McChesney with candy thrower, MJ Glaseman.  Decorators were Maury McChesney, Bobbi Marvel, Bettina Chavez, MJ Glaseman, Kathy Weinstein and Felicity Watson.
The Founders Trophy is the the Stanley Cup of Lilac Festival trophies.  We keep it for a year and then we will win it back!!

Lilac Festival

With the Lilac Festival under the direction of Mark Bailey, assisted by our own Judy Keim, and the weather perfect, this was one of the best Lilac Festivals ever.  We made new friends and raised funds for Comfort Zone.

 PROGRAM

Marie Centeno & Ginny Duhm

Oh boy, did we find out what "Wild and Wacky Stories"  was about!  QUILT FICTION MASTERPIECES.  Three groups were given the beginning of a wild and wacky story using the names of quilt blocks and had ten minutes to complete the story using more quilt block names.  Because Brenda Martin couldn't stop laughing long enough to read Group One's story, they were declared the winners but all three stories were hysterical.  Here they are.

From Group 1

Walking out last evening Sunbonnet Sue was absolutely ecstatic when she spied the Candy Wrappers on the Starry  Lane ahead of her until she discovered, much to her horror, Turkey Tracks all around and that each wrapper was void of candy--presumably gobbled up by you know who! What to do?  She loved candy and hated litterers....
She confronted a Soldier Boy.  He Churned Dashed and ran.  Sue went to see May Basket down the Drunkard's Path through the Town Square to the Log Cabin to Square Dance. However, Josephs Star stopped to tell her Chicken Foot, the Indian down the lane was to blame.  He was last seen on Main Street on his way to Arkansas with Boston Belle.  Meanwhile back at the square dance, they were serving Cabbage Rosebuds and Pineapple on Dresden Plates.  Dallas Star, Josephs brother, ate all the Milky Ways but he turned down the Bulls Eye.  His father, Lemoyne Star, invited everyone back to the House that Jack Built to chop Granny's Favorite Pine Burrs and eat Pigs in a Blanket and Pudding and Pie.  By this time, Sue forgot about the trash and got into trouble with Spinning Star, Josephs nephew.  Looks like there's a Double Wedding Ring coming to Grandmother's Flower Garden  during Tulip Time!

From Group 2

The Lawyer's Puzzle plagued him as he pondered the case before him--who was Robbing Peter to Pay Paul?  He turned the Hourglass over and over; it seemed that everyone owed Paul and there were so many, just like a Nine Patch of who's who of suspects...
Peter was at the House That Jack Built and it was at the Crossroads on the Cornerstone where the Log Cabin sat that had Windmills  Across from the log cabin was the Schoolhouse near the Town Square.  The Hen and the Chicks were behind the windmill where the Butterfly was too.  The Butterfly was knocked out of the sky by a Snowflake and a Snowball.  It landed on a Crocus and yelled out "Chickens Rule!"  It's hard to focus on the story with all this activity.  Possible suspects are the Flying Dutchman at the Log Cabin, the Soldier Boy who was flirting with Sunbonnet Sue in the Farmer's Field. Also Granny's Favorite.  Granny was quite old and she wore Bowties.  So now we call her Grandpa.

From Group 3

The trouble began when Grandma lost her Fan somewhere in the chicken yard and she so was distressed as she left the Hen and her Chicks, that she accidentally turned onto The Road to Damascus instead of the Mountain Road; she was headed for certain doom as she wandered alone.  But there was a sudden and startling Starburst overhead shedding light on much more than the path before her.  Where was she?....
Grandma was so upset she started walking the Drunkard's Path that started at Grandmother's Garden.  She wanted to get to the Ozarks.  To get over the road, she climbed Jacob's Ladder to get toward Texas Star but tripped over the Monkey's Wrench falling like a Tumbling Block.  Her grandson came running from the Log Cabin where he was doing a Card Trick.  He helped her back inside where he prepared 4 T's for her and gave her a snack on a Dresden Plate. Grandma was dizzy from her fall and was reeling like a Pinwheel remembering Wedding Rings, Wagon Wheels and Irish Chains.  He saw the Flying Geese approach, grabbed his shot gun to go out to get dinner.  But to his surprise he encountered a bear and shot it, harvested the Bear Paw, ground it up in the tea.  Grandma drank it down and now she is as fit as a Butterfly.

June's Program

On the night of June 4, Russell Scott-Conte will bring his trunk show "State of the Art" all the way from the Sewing Arts Center in Santa Monica.

Friday June 5, Beth Worrell is teaching a Patchwork Maple Leaf Table Runner class.  Cost of the class is $15.  Sign up with Marie Centeno.
Great class for beginners.

Show & Tell

Lynn Brown, sure to be a future Scrapper, brought in her grandmother's authentic 30's quilt top.  What you cannot see in the photo is the beautiful hand piecing.

Bev Cressey Went to Paducah!

Beverly Cressey went to Paducah, Kentucky for the annual quilt show.  Paducah is one of the "Big Ones" so we asked Bev how it was.  Instead of having the quilts in one place, the quilts are displayed all over the town of Paducah.  It's a great place to spend money since every quilt venue has a vendor.
Ricky Timms was there not only quilting but playing music.  Seems he is multi-talented.
Another quilter Bev saw was David Taylor.  Below is a link to David Taylor's website.
Next year, why don't we all go?

Action Wipes

Bettina Chavez's mom sells Action Wipes on line.  Action Wipes are for the body as hand wipes are for the hands only better and they can be put in the washer and re- purposed.  If you are using Action Wipes, save them for a quilting project later in the year.
Check them out at actionwipes.com.

Quilt Culture--Retreat

There's been lots of talk about the Guild taking a retreat. A quilt retreat is a period of time when you can quilt without interruption, can work on your own project or take classes, can quilt with friends or make new ones,  or all of the above at the same time.  A weekend retreat away from PMC could cost around $300 max each for a weekend including lodging and some meals.  We're looking at September/October 2015.

The Creation Station in Buellton has retreat facilities.  Or maybe you have an idea.  Bring it to the Brainstorm on June 12 at 12:30 in the PP, right after the Potluck.
