March 2014

President Message:  Quilt Trails.

Have you noticed the quilt blocks popping up on buildings in Frazier Park?  The FP Quilters are starting a Quilt Trail in the mountains.   While there are 43 trails in the US, there are only 2 in California.  It’s a great idea to promote quilting.  Here’s more info: http://www.barnquiltinfo.com/

Bulletin:
Road Trip to Taft and Maricopa
Join us at 11 am on Wednesday April 2 at the Clubhouse for a trip to Chicken of Oz in Taft for lunch and an afternoon excursion to the Maricopa Quilting Company to purchase fabric for Patricia Pepe’s class on April 4.  Drivers needed.

 Opportunity Quilt News

The February Quilting Bee was quite productive and a lot of fun.   The black and white wall hanging for the Lilac Festival is taking shape.  Mae Higgins will be rounding up volunteers for our Lilac Festival booth, May 17 and 18.

OQ2 is just about ready.  Someone in the Guild is going to take this beauty home.  Thanks to Fran Burras for the finishing up the applique.

The quilt pictured below is the Guild’s gift to the PMCPOA office.

Come by and see this quilt in person at the April meeting.

Thanks to all the members who stitched this together and extra special thanks to Alice Chitwood for quilting it.

This is just the kind of quilt that opportunity is made from.  With that in mind, plans are underway to remake this quilt as the
2014-15 Opportunity Quilt.

Program

Award winning quilter Patricia Pepe is coming to PMC in April.  On Friday April 4, Patricia will be giving us an X-block class—“Sweet Liberty” a 4th of July themed table runner.  The cost of this class is only $25.
Ginny Duhm (242-0022) and Marie Centano (242-5720) have all the info.  Sign up today.

This is not the class Patricia is bringing to us. For more info on Patricia, click on this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCHZrZVvFfg

Check out the photos of March’s program “My Favorite Tool” on the Shutterfly site.  It was a “Tip of the Month” extravaganza.

With the Lilac Festival just around the corner, Gracia Stahl and Diane McBain remind us that our card inventory is in need of replenishing.  We have 3 opportunities a month to work on cards at the Pool Pavilion:
The 2nd Wednesday, the last Thursday and the 4th Wednesday (with Comfort Zone.)
We can also work on cards at Quilt & Chat Fridays and at home.

Kathy Weinstein, Marie Centeno and Carol Wiersma attended the Kern County Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday March 4th to show off quilts and tote bags that we donate to the Jamison Children's Center.  The Board of Supervisors unanimously approved of our 100 quilts, 100 tote bags, 100 pair of slippers, cabbage patch dolls, and socks and underwear donation.
This year's quilts and tote bags are already being completed and turned in so keep up the great work.  Pick up kits at Friday Quilt & Chat or 4th Wednesday Workshops.  Join us on the 3rd Tuesday, March 18th from 10am - 2:00pm @ 2332 Alpen Court (242-7707) for kit making and packaging.  Please bring your own lunch.  We also meet together on the 4th Wednesday at the Pool Pavilion from 9am - 2:30pm.  Come for all or just part of the day.
Also remember that we donate new socks and underwear, so when you are in WalMart, Target or Pennys, pick something up for the kids.

If you have any questions about Comfort Zone and all of our activities, please call Carol @ 242-7707 or Felicity @ 242-1521.

Our "Revisited Program" is back for this year.  Many thanks to Sue Hochstein for sharing her thoughts about, "The Civil War Diary", by Rosemary Youngs.  There was such a silence in the room while we listened to Sue read the diaries of the ladies who made quilts during the civil war era.

Our Library also received a quilt book donated by Beverly Cressey, which she won at "Road to California".  The title is, "Amish Quilts, The Adventure Continues" by C&T Publishing.  Thank you, Bev

Tips of the Month

Alice Chitwood says you can make homemade “Best Press” with this formula:
1 cup vodka to 8 cups water.

This may replace the Christmas Party punch!

Gayle Gentile-Royal also has a tip for those of us who don’t see as well as we used to.  To thread your machine needle, place white paper behind the needle and the eye of the needle will stand out.

Want to hang a quilt?  Missouri Star has a tutorial that sums it all up.  So use this for the quilts you are making for the Kern County Fair and the PMS Quilt Show in 2014. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZPRt0NU9Hg
