August 2014 News & Views

August 2014

                      President's Message

I have a confession.  I do projects before I really know how to do them. Then I go back and learn a right way.  There's more than one way to do things and mine is usually okay at best but cock-eyed!   Oh, you all knew that!

So, let's take on paper piecing.  I've done it and the result  was okay and cock-eyed.  I found the tutorials below and what do you know?  I wasn't so far off but I need practice and I need to follow instructions.

There are dozens of online quilt tutorials on paper piecing.  There are dozens of quilters in our guild who are expert at paper piecing.  When they began maybe their finished product was okay.  Now it is exactly what a paper pieced block is supposed to be--crisp, sharp and exact.
If you want to learn about paper piecing, get some iced tea, sit down and watch these videos.

Comfort Zone
by Carol Wiersma & Felicity Watson

We are making great progress toward meeting our goal of 100 quilts and 100 tote bags for the Jameson Center in Bakersfield.  Currently we have 54 completed quilts with at least 10 that only need binding, and another 10 that are sandwiched waiting to be quilted.  We have 75 completed tote bags and plenty of kits ready to be sewn together.  Come join us on the 4th Wednesday Workshop August 27 at the Pool Pavilion as we continue to finish up this year's quilts and of course have some fun along the way.  If you need to pick up quilt or tote bag kits, Carol or Felicity will be at Quilts 'n Chat Fridays to pass them out.  For info call either Carol @ 242-7707 or Felicity @ 242-1521

Ginny Duhm had an even bigger smile than usual on her face because Darry is doing great after his surgery.

Q@MH is August 21 at the home of Carol Wiersma from 10 to 2.  Carol is making lunch so please RSVP at 7707.  Bring canned goods for the food bank.

Quilting in the Sierras donated a quilting book "Machine Applique Made Easy" by Jean Wells to the Library.  Thanks to Kay Smith for the donation.

CHALLENGE QUILT

Now that the Fire House Quilt is done, Brenda Martin reminds us that the Challenge Quilt is due for our October Meeting.  It's any combination of red, white and black, 30 x 30 or less.

Tip of the Month

MJ Glaseman says needles stuck in the back of a small wall hanging will be strong enough to hang the wall hanging if there's no sleeve on the back.

Marie Centeno suggests using binder clips to hold up something heavier.

Barbara Stuhan says the rings with clips from Walmart or Target will hold up the heaviest of quilts if you have enough of them.

Thank you, Melody Bustamante, for the 22 pounds of Fiberloft donated to the Guild.  Now we know how many pounds of Fiberloft can overfill a bathtub.

Contact Kathy W. @kimthebow@yahoo.com for your free Fiberloft.  Great for crafty things.

A Thank You card has been sent to Felicity & Bob Tong, PMC part-timers who donated a whole lot of polyfiber batting to the guild. Gayle Gentile-Royal took possession of it to make dog beds for the Craft Fair.  Contact Gayle if you'd like some for your project.  and thank you, Gayle , for taking it from the Pool Pavilion.
