May 2014 News&Views

May 2014

President’s Message:
I made a quilt for my girlfriend’s daughter when she was 10.  I told Joanie to sleep with the quilt. But I never saw the quilt on her bed. I was afraid to ask about the quilt, thinking they didn’t like it, it fell apart in the wash….maybe it was under the covers. But her Mom thinking the quilt was special because I made it, put it in a box to save it for Joanie.

Lessons learned:  Indicate what you want the quilt used for so there is no misunderstanding.  Speak Up and be proud of your effort.
Kathy

It's Your Quilt

It's OK if you sit on your quilt,
It's OK if your bottle gets spilt,
If you swallow some air,
and you burp, don't despair
It's OK if you spit on your quilt.

There are scraps old and new on your quilt.
If your gums feel numb
'cause your teeth haven't come,
It's OK if you chew on your quilt.

We expect you to lie on your quilt.
If you hurt, you may cry on your quilt.
On a cold, rainy night,
Don't fret; you're all right.
You'll be snug, warm and dry on your quilt.

From Our May 1st Meeting

Here’s Rory Worster accepting the quilt the guild made for the PMCPOA Office at our May 1 meeting.  Pictured are Chau Anderson (cougar), Bev Cressey (squirrel), MJ Glaseman (quail), Allie White (binding), Kathy Weinstein (proud president).  Many other guild members were involved in the making of this quilt but special thanks to Victoria Plesa (deer) and Alice Chitwood (bear, blue jays, concept, design and long arm).   No letters please.  No one is calling Chau a cougar!!

Here’s Fred Young at our May 1 meeting with Felicity Watson.  This is the quilt Fred’s grandma made him, restored by FelicityFelicity was able to save the ties his grandma used to bind the quilt while totally replacing the shredded back of the quilt.  Then she machine quilted it.

Photos of our May 1 meeting are on Shutterfly, compliments of our Historian, Mary McDevitt. https://pinemountainscrappers.shutterfly.com

Mary has completed our 2013 Yearbook.  Check it out in our Library.

Someone doing a spot on impersonation of Brenda Martin volunteered for Q@MH on May 29, from 10-2.  She’s making lunch and asks that you bring cans of food for the Food Bank.
It couldn’t have been our Brenda.  This Brenda was walking around with an ipad-like tablet.  RSVP with techie -Brenda via e-mail.  Her address is on the directory.  Or call the real Brenda at 242-5331.

We all have such busy lives yet it amazes me that any of us has time to quilt and amazes me even more how much everyone does for Comfort Zone.  So far this year we have 50 tote bags and 30 quilts.  But this is still a long way from our goal.  Join us for Comfort Zone Home on our new date of the 2nd Thursday, which this month is May 8th, from 10 am - 2 pm at 2332 Alpen Court (please bring your own lunch).  This is the time that we cut and package quilt and tote bag kits.  We also gather together to sew and quilt for Comfort Zone on our Workshop day the 4th Wednesday of each month.  This month we meet May 28th from 9am - 2:30pm at the Pool Pavilion.  Come for all or part of either or both of these days.  For more information please call Carol Wiersma at 242-7707 or Felicity at 242-1521.

Program   Ginny Duhm and Marie Centeno

Guild Member Felicity Watson was our featured quilter this month.  “The Designer in You” gave a glimpse into Felicity’s quilting process.  Her Basics class taught even the veteran quilters a few new tricks.  This is one class that is sure to be repeated.
And thanks to Felicity for all her quilting of Comfort Zone quilts.

On June 5th, the dynamic Sue Rasmussen will be our featured quilter.  Don’t miss her trunk show “A Desperate Housewife’s Quilt Journey.”  Friday June 6, from 9 to 2 in the Pool Pavilion, Sue will be teaching a class in Landscape Quilting.   This class costs only $25. This is one you don’t want to miss so sign up now with Marie (5720) or Gin (0022).
Check out Sue’s website at http://www.suerasmussenquilts.com.

  • Scholarships are available to members Here's how it works: If a class is beyond your budget, you may attend one class once a year at what you can pay. Contact Kathy Weinstein at 242-2217.
  • Guild members who attend classes will receive five Opportunity Quilt 2 tickets.  New members attending their first class will get ten OQ2 tickets.  Contact Ginny Duhm at 242-0022.
  • Wanted:  A Quilt & Chat location for Friday June 6.  Contact Kathy (2217).

Thanks to everyone who put in time and talent to make 600 cards in time for the Lilac Festival.  We need to put the finishing touches on what we have so stop in the Pool Pavilion on Wednesday May 14 to help out.

Parade Decorators Needed

Join MJ Glaseman on Friday May 16 at her home, 1916 Woodland, to purple- up her green VW bug for the Lilac Festival Parade.   Give MJ a call at 242-0405.

The Parade begins at 11 am on Mil Potrero.

The Guild has a booth at the Lilac Festival this year.  Mae Higgins is rounding up volunteers to work two- hour shifts between the hours of 10 and 4 on Saturday May 17 and Sunday May 18.

We will be raising money to fund Comfort Zone by selling our handmade cards and raffling off a lap quilt.  It’s also a great Opportunity to promote our Comfort Zone efforts and bring in new members.   Sign up with Mae at 242-2031.

Potluck....Brainstorm....Potluck..
It was agreed by all who were there that our April 11 Quilt & Chat Pot Luck was one of the best we ever had…and we have had some great ones.  So make sure to be there May 9 Q&C for the next potluck.
This month's Brainstorm is devoted to getting the 2015 Opportunity Quilt underway.  Bring your ideas to the May 9 Q&C Pot Luck.

Fire House Quilt News

Brenda Martin reminds us to complete our Fire House quilt blocks by June.  The fine winter weather has put the firehouse construction ahead of schedule. We’ll need some time to assemble it.

Unfinished 10 1/2” square block for the Grand Opening Firehouse Quilt.  Use red, black and white fabric.  If possible, try to find an interesting firehouse themed print.

Thank you Mae Higgins, Allie White and Beverly Cressey for generously donating books to the Library.
Thank you!

Tip of the Month

From Dawn Burns of the Frazier Park Quilters:
Store your finished quilts in pillowcases, not plastic.

From Kathy Weinstein’s mother, Jean Thomas:
Spray Downy on wrinkled tablecloths, then use a hair dryer to get the wrinkles out.  Does not work on the face.

From Shireen Walker:
Dip a washcloth in diluted Downy and use it instead of a dryer sheet.

From Felicity Watson:
Place a ball of aluminum foil in the dryer to remove static.

From a consensus:
Wash your lint screen to preserve the life of your dryer.

The video tip of the month "How to Square Up Fabric" is not necessarily a new concept but the quilter is even younger than Felicity!
