April 2015 News & Views

April 2015

President's Message

QUILT SHOW.....QUILT SHOW.....QUILT SHOW

Six weeks away!!
Carol's Disappearing Pineapple is ready for the show.

Can you tell how excited I am?  The 2015 Quilting in the Pines is shaping up to be the biggest and best ever.
Carol Wiersma and Felicity Watson and the committee have made changes in the format while keeping Scrapper traditions in play.
Here's a rundown of everything I think I know about the quilt show.

When?: Saturday May 16 from 10 to 4
Where?: Lampkin Park

What to do?:  Volunteer your time.  Contact Carol or Felicity to sign up.  Volunteer duties include greeting the public, answering questions about quilts, asking everyone nicely not to touch the quilts, promoting Comfort Zone by working with Cards and the Opportunity Quilts, smiling and being proud of our work.
Who can enter a quilt in the show?:  Any Guild member is eligible to enter a quilt of their making if that quilt was made in  2013, 2014, or 2015.
How does a quilt get entered?:  Fill out the Quilt Show Entry Form attached to this newsletter or call Kathy Weinstein for an entry form.  No pictures of the quilt are required.  Entries will be accepted up until the May 7 meeting. All quilts entered need to be finished and have a label attached. Technically a quilt is eligible for entry up until the day before the show.  But don't do that!
 Where do the entry forms get sent? Take them directly to Mary Morstad or Carol or Felicity.

Where do the quilts get dropped off for the show?:  Bring your finished quilt with the label on it to the Pool Pavilion on Friday May 15 during Quilt & Chat & More anytime between 9am to 2:30pm.

Is there a competition?:  The PMC Merchants will place ribbons on their favorite quilts.  They are not judging the quality of the work.  The Frazier Park Quilters will give ribbons too.

They are not professional quilters.
There will be no voting by the public.

Why?:  Because you made a quilt or a quilted item in one of our classes or on your own and the world needs to see it.  Be proud of your work, it's beautiful.

From Our April 2, 2015 Meeting

Welcome to Marla from Bakersfield and
Mae's friend, Judy visiting from Colorado.

~~~~~~~~~~
Sunshine  Gayle Gentile Royal
            Patsy Dubois is still recovering from her broken wrist.  Her son is back with her and her mom, Opal who just turned 103, has been moved to a hospice in Arvin.  Patsy says both she and Opal are doing well and thanks us for all our assistance last month.  We hope to get Patsy out for lunch with us soon.
           The reason we've seen so little of Linda Meek is that she was off the hill caring for her mother who passed away recently.
SOUP and Circle of Friends ........Candy Posson & Mary McDevitt
We are compiling a list of medical equipment that members have available for use in a pinch.  If you have a cane, walker, commode, wheelchair or any reusable medical brace, let Mary McDevitt know. You keep it until a need arises.  This is all voluntary, of course.
It was possible to begin and finish the confetti quilt during class time.
It was impossible not to get confetti on the floor.
Bev made us all feel like artists.
Carol was the first one done.
Thanks to Carole Beigle for hosting QCM.
A reminder:
Scholarships for classes are available for members on fixed incomes.  Volunteer time can be transferred into class time as well.  No one should miss a class because it is a financial hardship.  Please talk with a board member, Bev, MJ, Beth of Kathy if you need assistance with any "costs."
Quilt Show  Carol Wiersma & Felicity Watson
     Can you believe it, only 6 more weeks until the Quilt Show.  We already have 101 items entered into the show, WOW!  And, we are not done yet.  Several people have yet to turn in all of their entry forms, so get those to Felicity or Carol Wiersma.  You may also take them directly to Mary Morstad who is organizing all of the quilts.
Thanks to every one's hard work, the show plans and preparations are moving along very smoothly.  We should all have a great time at the show next month.
Lilac Festival Parade and Booth
Mark Bailey, president of the PMCCPOA and Lilac Festival chairman has given us a booth at the Lilac Festival.  So while most of us are in Lampkin Park with our quilts, just one or two of us will be at the booth in the Lilac Festival on Saturday directing everybody over to the Quilt Show.  The booth gives us another occasion on Sunday to promote Comfort Zone through Opportunity Quilt chances and Card donations.  And we are always looking for new members.
So if you run into Mark, thank him.
And when you run into Mr. & Mrs. McChesney--Maurie and Kathy--thank them for loaning us their golf cart for the Lilac Festival parade this year.
If you want to help decorate the float, contact Kathy Weinstein, keeper of the decor.  Time and place are to be arranged but it is always fun.
SCCQG Meets April 25 in Carson
            The Southern California Council of Quilt Guilds, of which The Scrappers are a member, is having the annual "Meet the Teachers" day on Saturday April 25, 10 to 12, in Carson. Here's where we can look over what instructors and classes are of interest to us in Pine Mountain. We will be car pooling.  Contact Kathy W or Bev Cressey for details.
Road Trip
        We all had a splendid road trip to Ridgecrest back in March.  The Hi-Desert Quilters show had some spectacular quilts and a lot of vendors. .  Stops were made at two quilt shops, and JoAnn's.  Carol was at the wheel during the long ride there and back, pointing out sights along the way including huge displays of wildflowers.  Kathy made us stop for coffee and Tong bought the donuts.
We were joined by Kay Smith and Barbara Stuhaan all the way from Bishop.
Another Ribbon for Liz
Liz Buchroeder was awarded a 3rd place ribbon in the Kern County Fair's  National Parks Sesquicentennial celebration for a photo of Death Valley.  Congratulations, Liz.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Letters
Our friend, Jean Bryant, sent us a lovely note. last month with her membership dues.  She is still quilting in Bakersfield.  Good to hear from you, Jean.
~~~~~~~~~~
Konga would like to apologize to Karen Koehn.  Her name was misspelled so many times in the February newsletter and calendar that even Karen doesn't know how to spell it anymore!  It's Koehn, pronounced "Kane."
  Tip of the Month
Carla Ferris suggests winding 5or more bobbins the night before you are going to class or working on a project so you don't have to stop what you're doing to wind one.
Kathy Weinstein wants you to learn from her mistake--don't quilt anything while you have the flu.
You will only have to repair the damage.
Quilt Culture--Labels
Adding a label to your quilt is an important part of QC--Quilt Culture.
A label identifies the quilt maker.  It places the quilt in a time and region.  Some labels name the quilt's recipient.  Some just name the quilt. A label enhances your quilt's value.  Here are a couple of articles about quilt labels.
