January 2015 News & Views

January 2015

President's Message

         It's time to renew your membership.  $25 a year gets you a year of fun and creativity.  Limited (off the hill) memberships are available at $15 a year.  Make checks out to PMSQG and mail it to our POB 5316, PMC 93222 along with your Lot Number.  The POA asks for it.  If you don't have a lot number, it's okay.  You can still be a member for $25/$15.  Don't have $25 right now?
Scholarships are available for members on fixed incomes.  Volunteer time can be transferred into dues.  Please talk with a board member, Bev, MJ, Beth of Kathy if you need assistance with any "costs."
           2015 is looking to be jam packed with classes and events.  It's our Quilt Show year.  Save May 16 for that.  Marie and Ginny are firming up teachers from off the hill.  They've also lined up beginners classes with Beth Worrell and Beverly Cressey.  Road trips and pajama parties are planned.  Ginny Duhm is going to introduce a Telephone Art quilt project in the late spring.  And Brenda and Terry's Halloween Challenge is due in October.

Don't forget Comfort Zone.  This year, we will be stripping for Comfort Zone.  Don't worry, the stripping is all in the quilts.  Come and have fun with us.

Wishing you happy and healthy and quilting New Year!

Kathy

From our January 8, 2015 Meeting

Welcome to our guests,
Julie Draa and Ava, Mel Bustamante's daughter.
Good to see Sue Hochstein back from Maine
and Carla Ferris rejoining.

Sunshine
Gayle Gentile Royal

Our Ms. Sunshine, Gayle, is out for a while having eye surgery.  Felicity can't shake her flu.  Fran's husband, Bob, had pneumonia but is getting stronger.  Cards sent to all.  Get better, everyone.

Linda Morton goes in for a valve job--on her heart--later this month.  She'll be down at Cedars and then back home with her daughter to care for her.  All our good thoughts and prayers go with her.

Comfort Zone
   Carol Wiersma & Felicity Watson

           It's time to go see the Kern County Supervisors for permission to donate our Comfort Zone quilts to the Jamison Center. Because the value of the quilts we make for the kids exceeds the legal limit for donations in the county, the Scrappers go down to Bakersfield once a year to "Show & Tell" our Comfort Zone Project. It is a formality and it is most appreciated by our Supervisors. If you can't make it, the Supervisors meeting is on line.

But if you can make it on Tuesday January 27, meet at the Clubhouse parking lot at 7:15 am to carpool.  RSVP with Carol Wiersma at 7707 so we have enough cars.  Oh, after we see the Sups, we go shop hopping and have lunch.
After all, it is fabulous Bakersfield.
                    Comfort Zone meets on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month from 9 to 3 in the Pool Pavilion.  When there is a fifth Wednesday, we meet for a Sew Down.  Same time, same place but much, much more goes on.

Gracia Stahl
Tong Sproul & Sonia Ricoy
Diane McBain, Artistic Director

          Card making returns Wednesday January 14,  9 to 3 in the Pool Pavilion, and continues every second Wednesday of the month.  It's our number one fund raiser for Comfort Zone and it's got something for every member from the most creative to the "all thumbs" (we don't have any members like that, though!)

Historians
Sonia Ricoy & Bettina Chavez

      Our historians, in addition to documenting our current events, will be compiling the history of our guild.  This project will be on going until it is done.  They will be looking for photos, documents, and most of all, memories.   More information to follow.

Check out ALL the photos of our meeting at
click here->pinemountainscrappers.shutterfly.com

Membership Lists  will be final in March and will be e-mailed to you.  Those without e-mail, will get a print copy.  Print copies will be available from Kathy Weinstein on request.  If you haven't had your photo taken or you'd like an updated photo for the membership list, contact our Historians, Sonia & Bettina.  Their numbers are listed on the e-mail for this newsletter.

Program   Marie Centeno & Ginny Duhm

Pictionary was a hit!  You had to be there.

February is the annual UFO show--unfinished objects.  You don't need to bring them, but you can for a UFO show & tell.  Compile a list of your UFOs that are lying around and their approximate age.  Prizes are given for the bests in procrastination.

A reminder:
Scholarships for classes are available for members on fixed incomes.  Volunteer time can be transferred into class time as well.  No one should miss a class because it is a hardship.  Please talk with a board member, Bev, MJ, Beth of Kathy if you need assistance with any "costs."

Parties
Marge Arroyo & Marie Centeno
Marge wants your suggestions, all of them, for the 2015 Christmas party.  Let her know what you want or don't want.  Call her at 1106.  She promises that the 2014 "singers" will not return.

Block Party
Liz Buchroeder & Beth Worrell

Valentine Star

       This year's block party has a bonus.  For every 12.5 inch block you make for the monthly Block Party, you make yourself a duplicate in Christmas fabric for your own Christmas quilt.
Since the blocks will be samplers, beginners can learn some basic patterns.  And Beth is teaching a class in February on beginning paper piecing that ties in with the first 2 blocks.
Block Party directions will be attached to the email for this newsletter.

Door Prizes
Shireen Walker

Congratulations to Ruth and Bev for having winning tickets this month.  To qualify for a door prize, wear your PMSQG name tag and see Shireen at the door.  Don't have a name tag yet?  Come to Quilt & Chat & More on Fridays and ask us.

Show & Tell
Margie Carrasquillo

         Mel Bustamante brought in her grandmother's hand quilted quilt from the Twenties. It's a treat to see these heirlooms close up.
Beginning next month, we'll have more Show & Tell spotlight.

Opportunity Quilt
Mae Higgins

If you have not gotten a raffle ticket packet or you need more tickets, contact Mae at 2031.

Quilt Show
Carol Wiersma & Felicity Watson

           Very exciting things are happening with the 2015 Quilt Show.  Mary Morstad, one of our past presidents, has signed on to do intake.  She is a master of this.  The entry process is simplified and no photos are required.  Categories include all class projects, friendship and challenge quilts and "others".  There is no limit to the number of items you can submit but it must be a quilt or quilted item made in the last two years.  Ribbons will be awarded by the PMC Merchants and the Frazier Park Quilters.

                 --------------->News

       Our Christmas Tree in the Village came in second for fan favorite.  La Lena was the winner but that's because they handed out ballots with every check!  They did have a nice tree.  Plans are under way for next year's tree with a definite quilt theme.
New member, Judy Keim, will keep us posted on this event.
:::::::::::::::
The Guild voted to post our meeting and QCM info in the Mountain Enterprise calendar.  It's at no cost.  We also will begin post in our events on the PMC Facebook page.
::::::::::

Melody Wernli is going to meet up with us at Road to California.  Alice and Victoria will also be there.  RTC runs from January 22 to 25 at the Ontario Convention Center.

Konga's Brain

The Brainstorm

      The Brainstorm is the place to bring your ideas, questions and complaints ---about the Guild. All other concern-- husbands, housecleaning, handymen--are discussed at Quilt & Chat & More.
It is held every second Friday following the QCM Pot Luck (12:30)  in the Pool Pavilion.  The Brainstorm discussions can be noisy but they are  lively, informative and fun.
:::::::::::::
Did you know we have a suggestion box?  It's at the door when we meet on the first Thursday.  we welcome comments and concerns but complaints should be accompanied with a suggested solution.

CALENDAR and BIRTHDAYS
From the Brainstorm:  The Calendar now has its own chair, Sonia Ricoy, who wears many hats.  The Calendar will be posted a week before each month, in advance of the newsletter and we hope it will be more concise and easy to print.  Birthdays will be included on the calendar.

HAPPY January BIRTHDAY

Board Meeting Report
The Board met after the monthly meeting on January 8.  The 2015 Budget was approved.  Beth Worrell reported that the treasury is sound at this time.
The board reviewed 2014 to make improvements for 2015.  Our goals for 2015 are to:
Have fun
Remain financially sound
Increase membership
Contribute to the community

Increase classes to improve our skills.

Other topics discusses were Committee Chairs, Programs and the Quilt Show.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Did you know we have a Budget Book?
The BB is always at the monthly Thursday night meeting
for members to look over and see how our money is spent.

Ink is reimbursable with a receipt.

Firehouse Quilt Update

        As we anticipated, the Firehouse Quilt fell off the wall.  Kathy Weinstein spoke with the firemen and was told that on Saturday, January 10,  there was someone coming up from Bakersfield to look into putting holes in the wall for screws to hang the quilt properly.  Kathy offered to donate a rod and brackets if necessary.
Stop by and thank our firefighters for just being here.  See if the quilt has been put back up.  If not, never underestimate the power of determined quilters.
:::::::::::::::

Be on the look out for.....
We are looking for donations of Cabbage Patch dolls to refurbish for Comfort Zone.  They are becoming  harder to come by.   Ask around, please.

  Tip of the Month

Beth recommends Silver Linings Originals for all kind of quilting ideas.  Lots of appliqué patterns on this site.  But be sure to add "originals" if you don't use the link below.
We run a clean organization here.

click here->:silverliningsoriginals.com

MJ was asked how she sells so may OQ raffle tickets.  Here's her tip for that:

Send e-mails to everyone you know with a blurb about Comfort Zone and a photo of the Opportunity Quilts.  Tell them they do not have to respond but if they would like to support Comfort Zone, contact you to buy raffle tickets at the price listed on the card in your packet.
Since MJ knows just about everybody in the USA, she gets about 30% return and for her that adds up. Actually it adds up for Comfort Zone.

Thank you, dear friends, for all your love and comfort over the past year concerning my mother.  She passed away peacefully on December 6. Your listening and your hugs meant a lot to me.
