March 2015 News & Views

March 2015
It's National Quilting Month!
Welcome new member, Kathleen Weeks.

President's Message

Brenda Martin, Past President

Our Past President and current all around go-getter, Brenda Martin, recently had nine of her quilts in the Canoga Park Quilt exhibit that featured Zena Thorpe (more about Zena later.) I asked her how she came to quilting.  She'd always sewn her own clothes and in high school, she and Fran Burras were "crafty" as in crewel, crochet and knitting.  In 1981, as a new grad nurse out of Pierce College, Brenda met
Hope Kirsch, quilter and respiratory therapist.  Brenda was also about to become a grandma for the first time. So Hope walked Brenda through her first quilt--a Sunshine and Shadow baby quilt entirely hand cut, like with scissors.  Rotary cutters were not invented yet! And that quilt is still around today. For Brenda that is what makes quilting special.  Clothes and crafts come and go but quilts last.  Soon she was quilting night and day, day and night.  She organized her nurse friends into the Stitch and Bitch quilters, also still around today.  When Brenda became a NICU nurse, she brought quilting into her practice by lecturing on how black, white and red quilts encourage stimulation of the brain in infants.

When she moved to PMC in the mid nineties, Brenda was very active in SF Valley quilters circles.  Because of this, the Scrappers made her program chair when she joined.  Brenda started our Quilt Show back when the Scrappers only had 18 members.  And she served her time as President!  She used the black, white and red brain stim on us last year with the Challenge and this year she's trying to scare us with a "Boo" Halloween Challenge..
What keeps Brenda quilting?  She has immense talent, energy and enthusiasm.  She enjoys stitchin' and bitchin' with  her friends and she seems to never run out of grandkids to make quilts for.  "When you make a quilt, the world is your oyster" says Brenda.  Your imagination has no boundaries.

Candy and Mary are taking the Meal Train up a notch. Once it is known who needs SOUP,  they will find out what is needed and for how long.  Then they will get the train started on line and on the phone.  And if there are pets who are in need while a quilter is in need, pet food is available.   Candy will walk dogs and play with cats, too.  Check out the membership list for Candy and Mary's phone numbers.

Bettina's favorite  quilt made by her grandmother.

My Favorite Quilt

Our March program was devoted to those quilts that have a special meaning to us. Some had quilts that bonded them to loved ones.  Some celebrated their first quilts.  Some had quilts that told stories, others brought quilts made for occasions.  Quilts came off of beds and were borrowed back from family members.  Several brought friendship quilts.  All quilts were beautiful.

On April 2, Marla Dike out of Bakersfield is bringing an Heirloom trunk show to our meeting.  On Friday April 3, Beverly Cressey will repeating her confetti quilt class.
Sign up with Marie.  Class costs $15.

Beverley's Confetti Quilt

We will need a QCM volunteer for the month of August.  That's Sue Rasmussen's class.

A reminder:
Scholarships for classes are available for members on fixed incomes.  Volunteer time can be transferred into class time as well.  No one should miss a class because it is a financial hardship.  Please talk with a board member, Bev, MJ, Beth of Kathy if you need assistance with any "costs."

Quilt Show entries are due at the April 2 meeting.  The actual quilt does not need to be finished by April 2 or photographed  at all but the entry needs to be in.  Entry forms are attached to this newsletter's e-mail. You may enter as many items as you wish provided they were made in the last 2 years and are finished by May 16, 2015.
The next Quilt Show meeting is March 17 at 10 am at the home of Mary Morstad.   See Felicity to sign up for volunteer times and donations of Pop Up/EZ Ups.  It's going to be a beautiful day in Lampkin Park.

Construction Relocates Scrapper Events

While the Club is renovating the Condor Room, the Scrappers hours in the Pool Pavilion have been cut to accommodate other clubs and activities.  This is only for the month of March, 2015.  Optimists  believe that the Comfort Zone Workshop will be in the Pool Pavilion on March 25.  Realists believe it will be held at the Artworks Community Gallery, 16233 Pine Valley Lane in the Village.  Announcements will be posted.

Quilt & Chat & More for March 13 and possibly March 27 will be at Kathy Weinstein's. We are looking for a hostess for the March 20 QCM.  The PP may only be available to the Guild between 11 and 2:30 on Friday March 20, if it is open at all.

Membership List

The Membership list was emailed on Tuesday March 10.  If you did not get it or cannot open or print it, contact your multitasking but happy to do so president, Kathy Weinstein.

We're Going to Fiesta Days

The Scrappers will have a table at Frazier Park's Fiesta Days, August 1 & 2.  Cards and the Opportunity Quilt will be on display and maybe we can entice some folks to join us.
We need a Chairperson for this awkwardly named "Fall Festival, Lilac Festival, Fiesta Days" Committee.  No experience necessary.
See Kathy W.

From the Brainstorm:

Actually, this is something that grew out of
Carol Wiersma's need to thin out her stash--
a Stash Bash for the newbies.

Bring fabric, books, thread, tools that you no longer need or want to QCM and let the new quilters have first pick of those items.

Zena Thorpe Road Trip
A group of Scrappers carpooled down to Canoga Park last month to see renowned quilter,
Zena Thorpe.  Along with Zena's designs, there was an exhibit of local quilters including
our own Brenda Martin.
By all accounts, Zena gave a fabulous talk.  She has a website at www.zenasquilts.com

Want more Zena?  Here's a video with Alex Anderson.

Another Road Trip?

Lloyd Askew has a sewing machine museum and Featherweight collection at his home in Anaheim.  He's invited us to come down and take a tour.  It's free.   He also fixes and refurbishes Featherweights.

This trip will take place sometime after the Quilt Show.  There must be some quilt shops and restaurants near Anaheim.

  Tip of the Month

This month's tip is in Q&A form.
Q: asks what do you do if your fusible appliqué is not fusing?
A:  Use glue stick or spray baste.

Here's a tip from Teri Lucas, a teacher at RTC about
Burying  Thread when you are machine quilting.

Editorial

There is talk in the community concerning the
privatization of the Kern County Library system.
Please make yourself aware of the pros and cons of this issue.
Having said that, it is the opinion of your president that a free public library is essential to a community
and even more so here in the Mountains.
Our Library is our de facto community center,  In an area with few resources, our Library is an anchor.  Our Library runs with the help of volunteers and dedicated staff.
A privatizing of the county system cuts off Kern from interlibrary loan, eliminates and replaces staff, and charges for services that are free in a free public library.   Our tax money should not
fund for-profit companies.
The Library belongs to us.
Please contact Supervisor David Couch with your comments, if you have any.

The Supervisors can be reached at:
