February 2015 News & Views

February 2015

President's Message

"Pine Mountain Club, the gem of Kern County"Supervisor David Couch

What I did in January ... Quiltwise
It was an eventful January for me.

A group of Scrappers went down to the Road to California Quilt Show and Convention in Ontario, California.  It was like Quilt & Chat on steroids. The show was fabulous and fun and it was great to be with Alice and Victoria.  Besides the quilt competition, there were theme quilts:  Beatles song quilts, "App" quilts, Egyptian appliqué quilts created before your eyes by live Egyptians, and the California State Parks quilts. I was introduced to new quilt instructors--Karen McTavish,  Teri Lucas and Gina Perkes--and new techniques.  In one of my classes, I was using a Bernina and  it was a beauty.  Then the instructor had us switch to better quality thread and machine needle.  The difference was like a dream!  The stitches were even and the fabric sailed through the machine.  I bet I could even sew a straight line if I had better thread and needles.  (I'm not getting a Bernina.)

Then a group of us went up to Bakersfield to the Supervisors meeting.  We do this annually.  It also gives us an excuse to shop hop. But at the meeting while Carol Wiersma was eloquently explaining why we make the Comfort Zone quilts, Supervisor Couch interrupted with the above quote.

Happy Valentine's Day to the gems of the Gem, the Pine Mountain Scrappers!
Love, Kathy

Comfort Zone
   Carol Wiersma & Felicity Watson
Thanks to the large crowd that we had for January's Comfort Zone Workshop, we cut enough 2 1/2" strips for this year's quilts.  Our February Workshop will take place on the 4th Wednesday, Feb. 25 at the Pool Pavilion.  We will be connecting all of these strips in preparation for making the strip quilt tops. So come join us on the 25th, bring your sewing machine and neutral thread.  Let's see how many miles of stripping  we can connect!!
Again, thanks to everyone for great Comfort Zone success.  We already have 11 quilts completed and 10 tote bags.
Good Job Gals!!!

Program   Marie Centeno & Ginny Duhm

February is always UFO month and our big UFO finisher this year is Carla Ferris.  Liz Buchroeder has the record number of UFO's this year at 29.  Good Luck, Liz.  You are in contention for next year's prize as well.
March 5 brings us Marla Dike from Bakersfield and her Heirloom Quilt Trunk  Show.
Marie juggling her Dresden plates.
Friday March 6, Marie Centeno is teaching us to make Dresden plate place mats.  $15 for the day.  Marie is using a design by Eleanor Burns so you know you can do it.  Contact Marie at the number on the e-mail page.

QCM will be at Bev Cressey's on March 6.
Details on the March calendar.

The dreaded paper-piecing was simplified by Beth Worrell at the February 6 class.   Next, we need to find a use for the thread snippets that accumulate from the ripping out backwards paper piecing.  But as the class went on, less ripping out occurred.
Beth recommends the following website for further instruction

It's magic!
We will need a QCM volunteer for the month of August.  That's Sue Rasmussen's class.
A reminder:
Scholarships for classes are available for members on fixed incomes.  Volunteer time can be transferred into class time as well.  No one should miss a class because it is a financial hardship.  Please talk with a board member, Bev, MJ, Beth of Kathy if you need assistance with any "costs."

Carol Wiersma & Felicity Watson

We are getting ready for the "Really Big Show".  We need EZ-UPS for the show, if you have one or know of someone who has one that we can use, please let Felicity or Carol Wiersma know.   We need workers for the show day itself, Saturday May 16th, again if you can volunteer for all or part of the day, let us know.  If you have ideas and want to help, come join us for the Quilt Show Committee meeting at Mary Morstad's house on Tuesday Feb. 17th.  16800 Aleutian.  If you have quilts to put in the show, fill out an entry form (one entry form for each quilt you wish to enter)  and get those to Felicity or Carol.  If you have questions or want to help, call Felicity 242-1521 or Carol 242-7707.

E-Mail

There was a consensus at the meeting that the newsletter and calendar are e-mailed without any issues.  Shutterfly continues to have some bumps.  Mary McDevitt suggests if you cannot access Shutterfly, delete what you have and start over.
Meal Train is our new e-mail.  It simplifies SOUP.  Give it a try and see how it works.

Membership List
.............................................will be final in March and will be e-mailed to you.  Those without e-mail, will get a print copy.  Print copies will be available from Kathy Weinstein on request.  If you haven't had your photo taken or you'd like an updated photo for the membership list, contacour Historians, Sonia & Bettina.  Their numbers are listed on the e-mail for this newsletter.

DAR Quilt Exhibit

Our snow bird, Sue Hochstein recommends the DAR Quilt Exhibit if you are in in Washington, DC.
It features quilts from Maryland and Virginia out of their vast collection.  The exhibit runs through September 5th at the DAR Museum, 1776 D Street, NW Washington, DC.  It is open 6 days a week, 9-5.  The quilts are amazing.
Not going to be in DC?
Here's the link to the exhibit.

((())) CALENDAR and BIRTHDAYS

Be on the look out for.....
We are looking for donations of Cabbage Patch dolls to refurbish for Comfort Zone.  They are becoming  harder to come by.   Ask around, please.

  Tip of the Month

From Carol Wiersma:  If you are having trouble with keeping your quilt smooth and wrinkle free for machine quilting, she suggests ironing your batting or putting your batting in the dryer on low for a few minutes. ...and starching (Mary Ellen's Best Press and Alice's vodka recipe works also) your top and backing before pining or basting.  This does not work for facial wrinkles.

Beth Worrell suggests, no, implores that you do not let your husband sort out the mail especially if he uses the "junk" mail for kindling.  She's waiting for her replacement paycheck!
