October 2014 News & Views

October 2014

President's Message  .........

The Pine Mountain Scrappers won ribbons for their quilts and other arts at the Kern County Fair.  MJ Glaseman can wrap herself in ribbons.  Her Mickey Mouse Tie quilt picked up three ribbons alone.

From Our OCTOBER 2 Meeting
Halloween
Laura Andresen's been watching too much TV.  She won first prize in our costume contest as "Flo from Progessive."  Or was it Alice Chitwood, who came as "Alice dressed as Beth dressed as Alice?"  Konga was laughing too hard to remember. Once again, the Scrappers Halloween costumes were witty and well thought out.

Compliments of Historian, Mary McDevitt.

"I will be giving up this post at the end of the year, so we were testing out a variety of cameras. Time does go by quickly and it has been 4 years that I have been able to hide behind my camera. Now I may have to comb my hair or do something. Thank you for being such good subjects."
Mary

PARTIES
Margaret Arroyo

Our annual Christmas Party will be held on the first Thursday of December, which falls on the 4th this year.  The theme is "Silver Bells".
Margaret will be passing around the pot luck sign up sheet at the November meeting.  Bring a guest for $5, but not your boyfriends.  It's a girls' night out.

Diane McBain recovered from a bout of the flu.
Marie Centeno sends thanks to all who sent condolences on the death of her Mom.

Next up, Beverly Cressey. October 23.  She''ll be making lunch so RSVP and bring canned goods for the Food Bank.

Bev is back from Africa.  She probably has a ton of photos and stories to share from her trip.

If you missed, Patsy DuBois's ribs at September Q@MH, she has been kind enough to share her recipe.

Patsy DuBois' Rib Recipe

She buys pork ribs at the Frazier Market and gets them cut to the size she wants and precooks them in boiling water for about 45 minutes.

She then prepares the sauce as follows:

3/4 cup of sugar
2 rounded tablespoons of corn starch
1/2 teaspoon of curry powder
1/8 teaspoon of ground cloves
1/3 cup of vinegar
2 cloves of garlic minced
2 tablespoons of soy sauce
3/4 cup of water

Mix all the dry stuff together, then add the rest of the stuff.  Bring to a rolling boil for 2 to 3 minutes till thick.

Put ribs in sauce and BBQ.  She uses charcoal not a gas grill.

There is a card workshop this Wednesday October 8.  We have over 500 cards for the Craft Fair, many of them Christmas and Hanukkah cards, and we need to package them.

 Tip of the Month

From Tong Sproul:

Work on one quilt at a time.

Felicity Watson brought in the finished heirloom quilts she repaired.  You cannot tell that there was any work done to them.  Her tip for aging binding--if you want that heirloom look--is to spray the binding with water and then scrunch it manually.  Dry it with a hair dryer and it should be as wrinkled  as a hundred years old.

 NEWS

The Legacy Of Nancy Strom

The Guild gained bolts of fabric for Comfort Zone, yardage for card making,  linen-like fabric for hanging quilts at the quilt show and books for our library from the contents of Nancy Strom's quilting room.  Members also took home fabric, notions, patterns and all kinds of crafting items.  Nancy had many talents and we thank her and her family for the donation.

OPPORTUNITY QUILT NEWS

Thanks to all who came over to Kathy Weinstein's home during the first week of October.  It was like Q@MH everyday and Kathy didn't have to clean the house in between!
Because there are no mistakes in quilting, it is NOT a reproduction of the Office Quilt but it's own work of art.  If all goes according to schedule, the top will be sewn together at QCM Friday October 10.
Tong Sproul has volunteered to quilt it for us.
Mae Higgins will be distributing envelopes with photos of the finished quilt and raffle tickets to all members at the December meeting.
This quilt will be named at a later date and will be raffled during the year from November 2014-November 2015.

Quilt Show Bulletin
Lampkin Park has been secured for our quilt show May 16, 2015.
Mary Morstad has agreed to be our QS taker-inner person,
a position she knows well.
