December 2015 News & Views

 December 2015

President's Message

May Peace be your gift at Christmas and your blessing all year through!

                                                                                  ~    author unknown
It's hard to believe that another year has gone by.  And it's been a good one for us.  Our Quilt Show in May was a smashing success.  Talented guild members won ribbons at the Kern County Fair and not just for quilting. Our Opportunity Quilts found a good home.  We reached our Comfort Zone goal.  And we had fun all year.
Thank you for having me as your president.

A Jolly Holiday Was Had by All

Once again the Scrappers had a splendid Christmas party.  Margaret Arroyo and her crew decorated beautiful tables (thanks, Sally Glenn for the Santa faces) and organized the best potluck on the mountain.  The Mountain Communities Resource Center sends their thanks for the food and the toys---really great toys--we donated for the holidays.

We had a lot of guests.  We had lots of prizes.  We had lots of laughs.  What we didn't have was anything made from Jello.

Some of the blocks we made for Linda Morton and Sonia Ricoy.

Liz won!!

Beth suggested you make a twelfth Christmas block for a
12 block Christmas quilt from your 12 inch Christmas blocks.

Next year's "keep your own block" will be a Patriot theme.

Craft Fair News

Congratulations to us.  It was a very good Holiday Craft Fair for the Scrappers on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.  Tong Sproul was the best seller.  Donations to the Opportunity Quilt raffle and Cards were quite generous.  Gayle Gentile Royal even changed her plans to be with us.
All in all, it was a very good day.

Congratulations to MJ Glaseman who brought in the most Opportunity Quilt money for the second year in a row!

Congratulations to Philip Gabriel for taking home the 2015 Opportunity Quilts.

Comfort Zone Day

On Tuesday, December 1, a dozen Scrappers convened at the A. Miriam Jamison Center to deliver our Comfort Zone items.  Joy Johnson, the Center's Director told us how they place a quilt and a tote bag on each child's bed on Christmas morning.  There are on average 200 at risk children who come through the Jamison Center each  month.  While many others in the greater Kern area support the Jamison Center, our quilts are unique and treasured by the kids.

Comfort Zone Day included lunch at the Village Grill, stops at  Beverly's, JoAnne's, Bolts to Binding and Strawberry Patches and an afternoon treat at Sweet Surrender.

Once again, much thanks to Carol Wiersma and Felicity Watson for
chairing Comfort Zone.  Bravo!

Opportunity Quilt News
....worth repeating
Allie White

As Opportunity Quilt chairwoman I would like to have quality control to make something nice that people will want to buy tickets for and keep the tradition of beautiful opportunity quilts that this guild is known for. Therefore I am only comfortable working from a complete pattern so we have a finished product picture in front of us and fabric measurements, etc.

If you are interested in working on the Opportunity Quilt, contact me. I will then decide on a time and place to meet.

At the first meeting whoever wants to join me on committee will choose three or more patterns for the entire guild to vote on.  Patterns can be brought or submitted earlier.
After the pattern is selected we will have a buying trip to purchase fabric and then the next meeting will be for cutting and packaging of blocks to hand out to guild members.

Excited to see how this develops into our next great
Opportunity Quilt.

Allie
